President Trump wrapped up a six-day, 20,027-mile tour of Asia on Wednesday with a meeting with Xi Jinping in Busan, South Korea. President Trump agreed to to trim down tariffs on China from 57.6% to 47.6% in exchange for China's agreement to pause some rare earth export restrictions and purchase massive amounts of U.S. soybeans and energy. “I guess on the scale from zero to 10, with 10 being the best, I would say the meeting was a 12,” the U.S. president said.

The trip also reportedly yielded investment pledges from other Asian countries: South Korea committed $200 billion over a decade plus the purchase of 103 Boeing planes, Malaysia pledged $70 billion, and Thailand agreed to buy 80 American aircraft. President Trump also presided over a Cambodia-Thailand peace ceremony and said he'd reopen talks with North Korea.

🧐 FBI Investigation: Operation Arctic Frost is a previously classified FBI investigation run by the Biden administration into alleged efforts by allies of former President Donald Trump to overturn the results of the 2020 election. New documents show that this investigation targeted up to 150 Republican officials. Subpoenas sought bank records, donor lists, and emails from nearly every major conservative organization in the country, including Trump's campaign and the RNC. And the investigation tapped phone records for nine Republican lawmakers. The primary concern in this investigation is the use of surveillance powers by a special investigator on sitting lawmakers, all Republicans. It gives at least the appearance of a partisan agenda, using powers of the law to further their own political goals. Republicans claim it has parallels to the infamous Watergate scandal of the ‘70s.

🍄‍🟫 U.S. to Resume Nuclear Testing: The U.S. will resume nuclear weapons testing for the first time since 1992 “on an equal basis” with other countries, though it is unclear what other countries are testing weapons currently. Russia recently said they had developed and tested a new nuclear-powered, nuclear-capable underwater drone with near “unlimited range,” as well as a nuclear-powered cruise missile with near unlimited range. Some arms experts say both weapons appear to be more bluster than actual working capability. Together, the two countries possess roughly 90% of the world’s nuclear arsenal.

💰 Government Shutdown: President Trump's budget team found $5.3 billion across military accounts to pay troops as the nearly month-long government shutdown continues. What a find in the sock drawer….

🥕 SNAP Benefits: Two federal judges ruled that the Trump administration should use a $5 billion contingency fund to continue food stamp benefits, preventing a freeze due to the government shutdown that would have affected 42 million Americans starting Saturday. The deeper story? Over 12% of the U.S. population relies on food stamp benefits, increasingly dependent upon the centralized federal government (just as did Rome in its decline).

🇮🇱 Middle East: The U.S.-brokered ceasefire faltered Tuesday after Israel accused Hamas of killing a soldier in Rafah (Hamas denied involvement) and Netanyahu ordered strikes in Gaza which killed, according to Hamas, at least 104 people (including 46 children). By Tuesday, the IDF announced it was “renewing enforcement” of the ceasefire, and mediators confirmed the truce was back intact after Hamas handed over two hostage bodies and Israel returned 30 Palestinian bodies on Thursday. U.S. officials are working to establish an international stabilization force.

🇫🇷 Louvre Heist: French police arrested seven suspects in the theft of $100 million in crown jewels, including one nabbed at the airport trying to flee the country. The jewels still haven't been recovered.

⚖️ Binance Founder Pardoned: On Thursday, President Trump pardoned Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, who plead guilty in 2023 to enabling money laundering and served a four-month prison sentence. The government said Zhao had caused “significant harm to U.S. national security” by allowing sanctioned Iranian crypto exchanges, Russian drug-traffickers, Hamas militants, and other criminal groups to move billions of dollars through the exchange. Binance was then banned from operating in the U.S. and paid a record $4.3 billion as part of the DOJ settlement. An Emirati firm recently used the Trump family's World Liberty Financial stablecoin to make a $2 billion investment in Binance, leading to criticism that the pardon was corrupt, while supporters of the pardon say that the Biden administration’s suit against Binance was unjust.

🇬🇧 Royal Drama: King Charles III stripped his brother, Prince Andrew, of his remaining titles and evicted him from his royal residence. The move comes under pressure from revelations about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of underage sexual misconduct. The former prince will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

🇳🇿 Red Sprites: Take a look at these rare atmospheric electrical phenomena, which appeared over New Zealand this week. Sprites are brief red-to-blue electrical flashes that occur high above thunderstorms in the mesosphere, similar to lightning, but occurring more than 30 miles above Earth's surface.
